The Character of the New Man
By Sharon Byrd

(Based on Colossians 3:12-17)

As I fight and I struggle to be the best that I can,

God constantly reminds me to put on the new man.

He even shows me characteristics

As they appear in His Word:

Walk as one walks as one walks when one’s heard.

God expects the new man to be more alive,

A reasonable expectation of the gift of new life.

As the Lord opens our understanding,

Never once is the Lord demanding,

But gently, the Lord is commanding

That we counsel and walk with the wise.

We are to:

Put on tender mercies,

Kindness, and humility;

Add meekness and longsuffering,

To complete our ability.

To bear with one another,

And forgive one another.

If anyone has a complaint,

Let us forgive one another

Even as Christ forgave you.

And let the peace of God rule

In our hearts, is the suggestion.

But above all we must love all,

Which is the bond of perfection.

…and be thankful.

Let the Word of Christ

Dwell in you richly in all wisdom,

Teaching and admonishing

In psalms, hymns, and singing.

And whatever you do in word or in deed,

To your friends, to the stranger,

Or anyone in need,

Do it all in the name of the Lord.
