In Everything Give Thanks
By Sharon Byrd

“Because you did not serve the LORD your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the LORD sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you.”        --Deuteronomy 28:47

In times of prosperity, when we are doing pretty good

Do we still call on Jesus like we know that we should?

Can He still speak to our hearts when our cup overflows?

Or is it only when empty, to Him that we go?

If you only limit yourself to pray in your weakness,

Don’t you think the Lord knows? Don’t you think the Lord sees this?

We need Him the most when we are doing our best,

Our needs might be filled… but what about the rest?

The families God gave us to help them pray through

Their personal battles, and God to tell them what to do,

If, when we receive the Lord’s gift of abundance,

We either not serve at all or we serve with reluctance,

Is it not righteous of Jesus to show us wanting and hardship?

Especially if in prosperity we would not give Him worship.

If you complain without cause, the Lord will give you reason,

If you only serve in poverty; poverty will always be your season.

He said, “Poverty will come upon us like a thief in the night,

You will serve other kingdoms, and your yoke will be tight.”

So the next time the Lord answers your prayers,

Rejoice in Him always, do not be a complainer.

Disobedience has a curse, a yoke to destroy you,

And only in obedience will this curse avoid you.

It is not the Lord’s will for us to remain wanting and poor,

But in everything give thanks, and in gratitude seek more.
