LESSON 2: ASK, “WHICH COVENANT?”

MEMORY VERSE: Psalm 119:103-104
“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path.” (NIV)

FAMILY DISCUSSION STARTERS

This week we continued exploring the question “What skills do Christians need to study the Bible well?”

We looked at how important it is to ask ourselves “What covenant do these commands describe living under?” whenever we read a command in the Bible.

The Old Testament mostly covers the covenant God made with the family of Israel at Mt. Sinai. The New Testament covers the covenant God offers to all people who turn from their sin and trust in Jesus. Christians are part of this new covenant, not the one God made with Israel. So this means that Christians are not required to follow all of the commands God gave to the nation of Israel.

• As a family, read Deuteronomy 15:1-6 and Philippians 2:1-11. Then discuss our key question, “Which covenant do these commands describe living under?”

• Why it is important to ask ourselves “Which covenant do these commands describe living under?” when reading commands in the Bible.

LESSON 2: WHO AM I?

MEMORY VERSE: Genesis 1:26-28

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” This week, we discussed what makes humans different from other creatures.

FAMILY DISCUSSION STARTERS

This week, we looked at Genesis 1:26–28 again to learn what it means to be created in God’s image. As a family, read through Genesis 1:26–28 again.

  • What does Genesis 1:27 tell us about being created in God’s image? (Hint: Look at the last part of the verse.)

  • Look at Genesis 1:28. What jobs did God give humans?

God created you in His image and gave you the job of caring for other creatures. Animals are special creatures, but they are not made in God’s image. Only humans are created in God’s image and have the responsibility to care for other creatures. You are not an animal; you are made in God’s image!

You have probably heard people say that it doesn’t matter if you are a girl or a boy. They believe that each person is the same and shouldn’t care about whether he or she is a girl or a boy.

  • Think back to Genesis 1:26–28. According to these verses, did male and female happen by accident or did God plan this on purpose?

God created you as a boy or a girl on purpose! If you are a boy, you show the world God’s image in a way that only boys can! If you are a girl, you show the world God’s image in a way that only girls can! That doesn’t mean that you are the same as every other boy or every other girl. But it does mean that there is something very special about your gender!

Spend time thanking God for making you in His image. Thank Him for giving you the responsibility of caring for His creation and for making you male or female on purpose.

LESSON 2: GOD’S CONTINUED PURSUIT (JONAH)

MEMORY VERSE: 2 Chronicles 7:14
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

FAMILY DISCUSSION STARTERS

  • Do you typically see yourself as Jonah in this story, or as the Ninevites?  Why is it so important for us to learn from both?

  • Have you ever felt angry because of something God did, allowed or asked you to do?  How would you respond if the Lord asked you why you were angry with Him?

  • Does it surprise you the Jonah’s simple message was so effective?  Why or why not?
